F1 European Grand Prix 2009 – Analysis and Statistics

Posted by f1cafe on August 24, 2009

After all, Valencia did not turn out to be such a boring race. The dual between Lewis Hamilton and Rubens
Barrichello kept us interested in the race, until the 2nd round of pit stops. After the 2nd pit stop, it’s clear
that Rubens was going to win. But you could never write Lewis off as he always tries a bit harder than most
other drivers. In the end it wasn’t Lewis’ day.

What a race by Rubens. He kept his pace consistent and no mistakes at all. Its fantastic to see him win again,
after almost 5 years. Hearty congratulations to Rubens. Its great to see all other teams (especially Ferrari),
applauding Rubens when he was going into Parc Ferme.

A disappointing race return to Luca Badoer. Hope Ferrari get a quick guy in as soon as possible. Apart from Luca,
this race also featured many other newbies/rookies (Romain Grosjean, Jaime Alguersuari).

The championship leader Jenson Button struggled for the fourth race
in a row, but this time he was lucky not to lose points to Red Bull drivers. His Red Bull rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian
Vettel failed to capitalise and Jenson’s difficulties. Webber just finished out of points, and Vettel had an engine failure
(two Renault engine failures for him this weekend). Jenson managed to finish 7th to score 2 points. Interestingly,
with a 10 point haul, Rubens moved from 4th to 2nd in the standings and is now 18 points behind Jenson. Now all
it takes is a DNF by Jenson, and Rubens is back in the game. Jenson scored for the 11th consecutive race this season.

For the first time this season, 11 drivers fell out of title contention,
purely going by mathematics. These drivers include three mid-season debutants (Jaime, Luca, Grosjean) though.
The most notable amongst these are the two BMW drivers Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. This sums up the miserable
season of BMW.

Also out of the constructors title hunt are the teams Renault, BMW Sauber,
STR-Ferrari and Force India.

Thanks to two great results from Lewis Hamilton (a win in Hungary and
2nd in Valencia), McLaren have managed to leapfrog Toyota and move up to fourth in constructors standings, and are
very close to catching Ferrari for third place. While Kimi managed two podium finishes in last two races, Ferrari need a
good second driver, if they want to keep hold of third place in constructors standings.
